Faded Landscapes

Faded Landscapes is a collection of en plein air paintings created during Alex Face’s 1,200-kilometer cycling journey from his studio on the outskirts of Bangkok to Penang. Over 14 days, he painted directly from life, capturing fleeting landscapes in response to the shifting light, weather, and terrain. The series explores the tension between impermanence and preservation—while the landscapes themselves change, the act of painting becomes a way to hold onto a moment that is already disappearing.

Cycling is more than just a means of travel for Alex Face; it is an extension of his artistic practice. The physicality of the journey allows him to engage deeply with his surroundings, responding intuitively to the places he encounters. His route takes him through lesser-known roads and ancient landscapes—many of which are now under threat from rapid development and industrialization. Through Faded Landscapes, Alex Face not only documents these places but also reflects on the broader social and environmental changes reshaping them.

Alex Face’s artistic identity is closely linked to his signature character—a three-eyed, childlike figure that often appears in his street art and now finds its place within Faded Landscapes. In these paintings, the figure becomes a quiet observer of the changing environment, blending into the landscapes as a symbolic presence. It embodies curiosity, nostalgia, and the act of witnessing—a reflection of Alex Face’s own engagement with the world around him.

This exhibition represents the third chapter of en plein air landscape painting series, following previous journeys to Khao Lak and Chiang Mai. With each iteration, Alex continues to explore his relationship with travel, nature, and artistic tradition. His work invites the viewer into a world of motion and reflection—where landscapes, much like memories, exist in a constant state of change.
